Yesterday I took my 6th gen 4runner up into the mountains for a day of hiking. My observations were that the 4cyl engine did great. I was at about 6500 ft of elevation. No issues climbing and decending was a breeze with the manual shift option in the 4runner. I switched between 2nd and 3rd gear depending on the grade. I will say I am not 100% in love with the way the engine sounds. Sometimes when there is no other noise in the cabin like music or talking you can definitely hear it. I could barely here the turbo when I was near a rock face and the sound was echoing off. Usually on first acceleration. Once again I was quite pleased with the performance.

Good feedback. The previous NA engine could be a dog at high elevations. New turbo gas and turbo hybrid engines are shining for owners at higher elevations. One of the advantages of going forced induction. 👍

As for engine sound, I wonder if any aftermarket air intakes can help with improving engine sounds of the iForce engines.

Maybe. It just doesn't sound as cool as the v8 in my RAM.

Love to hear that. So much of the "hate" on this new engine is coming from folks who haven't driven it yet. My 6th gen is lightyears ahead of my 5th gen from a driveability factor. I'll be doing a ton of towing/camping with it over the next few months and will post some updates/reviews after the fact to weigh in on that side of things too.

I have never driven the 5th gen. So for me it is the opposite. My only concern is longevity. Time will tell on that. Will probably see it in Tacomas first.
