Hmmm. We’ll see how this plays out. I’ve been trying to keep up with news on this specifically but of course with nobody knowing exact details it’s hard to assume things. I’m wondering since my 6G landed at port March 20th but say still hasn’t been “checked in” or processed at port by the 2nd, if this would affect things.
I assume that your dealer paid for the 4Runner as soon as it left Japan? I don’t know the payment logistics. IF it was already paid for I think it would be exempt from any tariffs. I really really expect this to be rescinded when he, they come to the realization of how many US businesses will be affected in a negative way.

If Toyota commit to opening factories here in the USA to build cars that are now built in Japan, I suspect Tariffs would be put on hold or reduced until they open the factories. The goal is to increase domestic production in the USA. Traditional US brands including Ford and GM use Mexico and Canada. I see nothing wrong with the goal is increasing Made in USA products. We'll see pain before gain.

Except they already do build some models in the USA. The Japanese company is supposed to build all their vehicles here? Ridiculous. I'd rather mine be built in Japan anyway.

As I stated, if they move manufacture of the Japanese built models to the USA, no tariffs would apply. I suspect a commitment to do that would also "suspend" the tariff's unless they back out. It's definitely messy and complicated. My 4runner is expected at the dealer in the next two days so, no tariffs for me. Heck, they are already too costly.

The goal is to reduce the trade deficit. And instead of American car companies producing better products the rest of the world wants, this is a big government move to force feed the (American) population with our own bottom tier products. Ironically, this hurts American consumers the most and is bad for business. We live in a global economy. Why are people drooling over reshoring manufacturing jobs, they are going by way of automation anyway.

if they add a single cent on top of my already inflated 4Runner price I’m out. Drive my J-Vin Rav4 v6 a while longer till this circus moves on

Dealer told me the tariffs that are due to be applied on April 2nd are reciprocal tariffs so whatever Japan charges the U.S. for U.S. made cars we would charge the same rate. So hopefully Toyota and Japan work out a deal and then would be able to be work out a deal with the U.S.

Well, Toyota already runs 11 Factories in the US and just opened the new battery plant in North Carolina. It doesnt seem to matter with Trump or his sidekick Howard Nutlick...I mean Lutnick.

I will not pay another dime for my order. I have everything planned payment wise etc., it had been discussed with the dealer and I will be able to get my down payment back if the Tariff is implemented.

Dealer is not correct. Reciprocal tariffs are for other items. The order is 25% for ANY imported vehicle. Japan has a 0% tariff on US Autos. We currently have a 2.5% tariff on japanese vehicles.

I would think that the US is a huge market for Toyota so they have an incentive to make this work or lose market share.

I have been a die hard buy American, including cars and trucks. I have two in the garage now. They have served me well but the dealer's repair departments suck. Skills, upsell, extourtionate costs. That coupled to big reliability issues with Ford and GMC. They are not the only ones with recent issues, while looking for a vehicle, I looked at Mazda, LandRover, BMW. All had issues, I mean serious issues and they are not dealing with them very well. That is why I choose Toyota. At least they stepped up to the plate with the Tundra issues and I believe the Tacoma issues.

If my 4runner6G works out well, I will be looking at a Tundra, Tacoma or possibly a Sequoia. Obviously cost will play into the decision.

Out of interest, while researching reliability, Porsche came out very high on many listings. But, purchase cost is also high.

USA companies need to add quality in to its offerings very soon. Dealers need to start being honest, give fair pricing for service work, etc. From my experience with Ford dealer service department, two states and 5 dealers, they all seem to have very few truly skilled workers. When I, as a customer seem to know more about an issue and fix than an advisor, something is wrong. The per hour charge is getting up there to that of a professional like a lawyer or accountant. I know the techs don’t get paid that hourly rate but still.

While I am on a rant, they need to stop the service work program that rewards the technician for faster work. The reward should be for quality work.

US Cars and especially trucks can be very good and leading edge. Reliability is letting them down.

Rant over.

Guys, Until we hear directly from Toyota I would be VERY cautious listening to dealerships. I have heard it as well "They wont tariff your TRD Pro because it will be already built". I called BS. Tariffs are assessed at the Port. Unless something changes, I surmise all new port arrivals after April 2nd or 3rd will be hit with the 25% tariff. Again, unless something happens in Washington.

Reached out to my dealer today. My car was built on Mar. 21 and he guaranteed the price would not change, and sent me the final build sheet with the price on it. So i think fair to say vehicles built before 4/2 would not be affected. More details to come from the political situation, naturally.

I just received word from my dealer that my price is locked in as well because I reserved the vehicle last weekend and paid their reservation fee. This is good news in the short term, at least for me. In the long term, if the tariff's persist, it will cost more to mod or maintain the vehicle, since the taxes apply to parts as well. It may even cause insurance to go up since it will be more expensive to repair the vehicles.

I'm guessing that Japan and other countries, or the specific manufacturers, make a few concessions to the administration, then the administration will call it a "win" and back off the tariffs...without any real impact on American manufacturing. If American's want to compete in the long term, we need to design and build better cars. I've owned two American cars (GM and Jeep) and they (and the service of those vehicles) were both underwhelming. I've owned four German cars and they have been good, until about 80K - 100K miles, then they get very, very expensive. I'm moving to Toyota for its good reputation and the utility of the 4 Runner. The fact that 4 Runners are made in Japan are a definite draw to the brand (even if it is a "4 banger").

I took delivery of my TRD sport premium today. The dealership I worked with seem very nonchalant and said they expect that there will be no tariffs and that this is just our president playing his games, maybe they just had their poker face on and were acting like they were not a bit anxious but that is what they portrayed to me that they have no worries at all about this tariff thing.

I’ve been told that dealers are waiting on inventory and vehicles are just sitting in Japan without a VIN #. This is gonna impact everyone waiting on a vehicle.
