Can you open the liftgate when in the garage with the door closed?

(2025 ORP) My garage is about 20'7"deep but the innermost 4' is a step-up of about 4" (a raised path to walk in front of the cars), so it's really only about 16'7" deep. I have no idea if this is typical, or small for a garage (it's a 1990's house), but a full sized truck definitely won't fit with the door closed.

When I park (front-first) the ORP with the front wheels just touching that 4" step-up in my garage, the liftgate will hit the upper horizontal rail on the closed garage door (needs a few more inches of clearance).

Fortunately I saw a Youtube video that showed, if you have the rear window rolled down, the liftgate motor is disabled. So I was able to push the liftgate up slowly (dang that thing takes some effort to open/close manually), just to the point below that horizontal rail on the garage door where I could see that it was going to hit. The liftgate would have crashed into that rail if I had tried opening it in automatic mode; glad that didn't happen.

So I guess I either need to reverse park if I need to e.g. unload groceries via the liftgate; or, put it in 4H when entering the garage and climb up a few inches onto the elevated 4' area.

How about for your garage and 4runner?

If mine is in the garage the liftgate totally hits. Garage opening is 6'9"

What I didn't try yet, but I'm pretty sure it will hit too (for a different reason, at the top of travel) is opening the liftgate (forward parked) with the garage door up. I think there's a way to limit the upper travel of the liftgate but I haven't looked that up yet. It seems the factory default is full extension lift.

edit to add: here's a video of adjusting it but on a different toyota model. I'd guess it's the same. I like the button hold from the rear since you can set a custom max height.

I have mine adjusted so that it does not hit the garage door when open. You can set the opening height very easily. It's in the owners manual. Raise the gate to where you want it and then hold the close button until it beeps a few times. Your gate is now set. VOILA !!

I did this also. Unfortunately, the garage in my 50s/60s home is not quite deep enough, so I still have to open garage door when forward parked to open the lift gate. At least I don’t have to worry about it banging the garage door or ceiling now though.

haven’t figured out how to revert that to full height yet (in case I am out and need to load something larger), but I will.

Yes, I'm wondering that too (if you want the new max to be higher than the old). I'm thinking maybe (standing at the liftgate) you open it to the preset max, push it UP manually to the desired height, then hold in the button to reset to current height.

Either that or you can go to settings in the dash and set it to height #5 (max). Mine was set at 5 from the factory.

PS setting #3 from the dash is pretty low; less than half way open. So I guess setting #2 and #1 (even lower) must be for cases where e.g. you want to haul a 10' 2x6 or something that sticks out the back for your drive home. That way the liftgate is mostly down (but your reverse camera and digital rearview won't be aimed quite right in that position).

I can open mine pulling in forward or backwards but it’s a tight fit.

I can confirm from my post above that if you have the max height set fairly low, to increase it you just open it to the current (low) max limit, manually push up the liftgate to the higher position you want to re-set the max to (it takes some effort to push it up), then push and hold the left button on the liftgate till it beeps a few times, and it re-sets to the new max height where you just pushed it to.

So a good process to set the ideal height for your garage door when open is first set the max height pretty low (e.g. dash setting #3, or manually set it low enough that you're sure it's too low to hit your garage door). Then pull into your garage, leave your garage door up, go back and auto-open the liftgate to its safely-low max, push it up manually so it just clears your garage door, then press and hold the left button.

on my last highlander my kids managed to set the opening to about 6 inches while on a road trip.... that was a frustrating 10 minutes while I tried to get it reset
