Yes, charging at home is usually cheaper, some people though have very high utility rates. Using my example above a utility rate of $0.40/kWh is the same as gas.


We are grid tied solar with 1:1 net metering. Our array covers 95% of our needs, including EV charging. The cost of the electricity from the array based on the cost of the array, it‘s lifespan and projected production is $0.07/kWh. So we are waaay cheaper.
Exsctly. An EV really only makes sense if you can do the majority of charging at home. If you do charge at home, it will be much cheaper than gas in just about any location, especially if you have solar or buy low priced power at night.

My office building has 2 totally free chargers and there is almost never anyone using them. Who knows whether they'll still be free or mostly unused in 2 years when I take delivery of my Traveler, but if so it's where I'll be doing most of my charging.

Surprised I'm seeing no mention of the Ford 3 Cyl Ecoboost as a possible RE mill. This is the motor that fits in less space than a carry-on bag and puts out 100kW. A refinement of this motor seems like a well packaged, cheap, and more repairable option than a lot of the suggestions. Of course I would prefer diesel or even better a micro-turbine (or both) but the Ford option seems best to get on the road quickly.

With VW as the primary investor, I'll bet it's going to be a VW engine or an engine from the VW group.

I should have added, with the lengthy on-again off-again history of partnerships between VW and Ford that is part of the reason I was surprised to see it hadn't been brought up.

It will probably be a 4cyl boxer or a 3cyl inline from VW making 95-100hp N/A.

A diesel generator would be more fuel efficient and have a much better lifespan. If they use gasoline it will just be another poor decision on powering this thing
If you are attempting to build a REEV that reduces the CO2 and other pollutants associated with ICE, a diesel is a pretty dirty option, and you'd need room for a DEP tank, etc.

DEP is so stupid all its urea and water. Basically your slowly flooding the engine better off with normal gas.

DEF is injected into exhaust. It never enters the engine.

Poor quality Diesel Exhaust Fluid may also contain impurities that can lead to corrosion or other damage to the engine.” Thats coming from a diesel engineer who has worked at the GM dealership i used to work for. Since we used to delete the systems before they became mandatory. Also the same reason why Cummins used to remove the DEF system for production engines after the EPA would test them.

DEF is injected after the exhaust leaves the engine. It only gets into an engine unless someone screws up and adds it to the fuel tank. If that happens it can cause damage to the engine, injectors, and filters.
