Brings up a question i've been curious about since i havent been a 4Runner owner since 1st gen era. As these are all automatics do they have remote start capabilities on the key fob or is that reserved for the cell-phone based subscription app?

Having had an electronic key destroyed by a rogue wave at the beach, I very much prefer a plain metal key.
I also didn't like that my 2010 4Runner has no keyhole on the passenger side.
Not a fan of push-button start either.

I can empathize. However, the reality is the transition from ignition switches activating mechanical linkages (like rods pushing a switch on the firewall) to purely electrical systems happened gradually over decades.

Even with a physical key, since the early 2000s, turning the 'physical' key has effectively been no different than the start/stop push button. They both just send a signal to the ECU, the security chip in the 'key' is validated, and the car's instructed to start.

I prefer the key as well, even though I know there's no difference anymore between that and the button. Literally.

:)

Side note, having had to replace one of those ignition switches, you learn to love today's reality.
