DIO, PIO, LIO, FIO, GST, SET meanings + what happens at Toyota "Ports" (distribution / processing centers)

I've seen questions on what these mean. For anyone new to Toyota, here's what these acronyms mean:

LIO = distributor installed option
DIO = Dealer Installed Option
PIO = Port Installed Option
FIO = Factory Installed Option


More detailed explanation:

After 4Runners are built and come off the assembly line in the Tahara plant in Aich, Japan, they're not delivered directly to US/Canada dealerships, but to vehicle distribution / processing centers in the US and Canada — AKA “Ports”.

The ports then install Port-Installed Options (PIO) on the 4Runner, prints the vehicle’s window sticker (Monroney sticker) and then allocates the 4Runner to a dealership or regional distributor group — like GST (Gulf State Toyota) and SET (Southeast Toyota).

Regional Toyota distributor groups like GST and SET will sometimes even offer their own special model packages/options (LIO - distributor installed options) with a custom mix of factory options and aftermarket accessories, leather trim, custom badging, etc. These 4Runners would then arrive at the dealership with the special upgrades installed and included on the window sticker. These special package’s parts are then warrantied by the dealers in their region.

BTW — “GST" stands for "Gulf States Toyota" and "SET" stands for "Southeast Toyota," both referring to regional distributors that supply Toyota vehicles to dealerships within their designated geographic areas. Both are considered "Private Distributors" within the Toyota network, meaning they supply vehicles to dealerships in their respective regions.

GST covers states like Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, while SET covers states like Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

Finally, Dealer-Installed Options (DIO) are just that — options installed by a dealership once they receive their allocated 4Runners.

Best explanation of these terms I've come across. And cleared up the whole distributor group thing for me. Toyota has one convoluted dealer network arragement in the US wow. Wonder if it's like this in Japan too.

P.S. I wish the 6th gen 4Runner got a Lime Green color like that up top!

THanks for that information. My question is, can those PIOs be removed once at the dealer? Like the added length of subscription-based options, or roof cross bars, etc?
