How come the Land Cruiser requires high octane gas, yet the 4runner (also hybrid and with same engine) doesn't?

Probably to keep the proles from stepping into a LandCruiser, even if it's really just a Prado.

I'm assuming the 4Runner is slightly detuned. Or the engine has to work harder in the LC because it's heavier and it starts getting overworked when trying to hustle that pig, and premium fuel calms it down :D

Interesting info. I don't know enough about engines to understand but seems weird that they have the same engine but only the LC takes high octane. One of the main reasons that are leaning to the 4Runner.

Huge discussion point over at the LC forum. If I recall right, the main takeaway was thought to be the LC as a global vehicle needed premium specification in markets where gas might not be as good as what we have here. So Toyota didn’t change the requirement for N.American vehicles. But the 4R as a N.America product could be spec’d with our regular gas. Not sure I get it, but I may not understand the whole discussion.
