Like many of you, I have a certain configuration in mind when it comes to options, especially PIOs that don't interest me. Upon doing research on changing PIOs, it seemed hit or miss on getting changes done on any Toyota model, let alone the new 4Runner. I wanted to share my experience on successfully swapping out the PIOs for my build. My 4Runner is built but waiting for the boat. Timing may play a role in how successful requesting the change may be.

Before getting my allocation, I had deposits for a waiting list spot at three dealers. When asked, all three dealers said they don't/aren't able to request PIO changes. After some searching, I was able to locate a non-sold Black Trailhunter that I wanted and quickly placed a deposit to put my name on it. I didn't originally think to ask them about PIO changes since I was already told no three times but today I decided to ask anyway and they granted my request! The one I wanted to remove the most were the badge overlays. Why anyone at Toyota thinks anyone would want to cover up the bronze front badge that match the rims with anything sounds crazy to me.

The dealer emailed me back saying they requested the changes in the system and even sent me a screenshot of the confirmation of the removals and adds I requested. Now, the changes I made did cause the MSRP to increase $100. I'm not sure if that means anything but I have read that dealers don't like to request this change if the request is to just remove everything as that lowers the price of the vehicle. The dealer made no promises that the change would go through but I did notice that the Toyota inventory website was already updated to show only the PIOs I requested so I'm hoping that is a good sign. Your dealer region may play a role as well. I'm sure we've all read about the forced PIOs in GST states.

For anyone curious, this is what I sent my dealer:

Current PIOs:
Key Gloves - Remove
Mudguards - Remove
All-weather Cargo Mat - Keep
Reflect Black Heritage Grill Letter Overlay - Remove
Badge Inserts: Black - Remove
Rear Cargo Lamp - Keep
Cargo Cover - Remove
Tow Hooks Upgrade - Front - Red - Keep

Add PIOs:
Side Storage LED Lantern
Integrated Dashcam

I still don't know what the tow hook upgrade is but I've been seeing them on a lot of Trailhunter allocations lately. I think it's the new red ones they put on the 2025 Tacoma but as a PIO for the 4Runner. If so, they sound amazing!

Here's a link to the 2025 4runner accessories brochure (they still have no brochure for the vehicle itself). There are some red tow hooks shown but not sure if there are other options not shown in the brochure. These are generally better (bigger) photos than within the build and price tool.

PS, I've noticed a lot of recent allocations have the 3/4 roof rack ($1710 added) so they are really pushing that one on people. Not that it's a bad rack or anything, but it should be a free choice for the customer.

I don't know what to say about some salespeople saying it's no problem to change PIOs and others saying no changes are possible (even from dealers in the same city), except that it seems likely the ones that say they can't are lying. I can't imagine Toyota allows some dealers to do it and some not to.

Thank you for that link! I can see the tow hooks are exactly the ones they added to the 2025 Tacoma and that many seek to purchase. I'm happy I kept them.

Agreed on the ability to change PIOs. It seems my dealer clicked a few buttons in the system and it was done so I'm not sure why a dealer would say no to getting a customer exactly what they want. I understand if the request is done too late and the port has already completed the installs.

Why do you need tow hooks? Are you worried about it breaking down?

I'm in the GST region. Requested removal of: all-weather cargo tray; ball mount; connectivity kit; roof rail cross bars; and predator step; and addition of of the black cast aluminum running boards.

Everything was approved except for the predator step/running board swap.
