I asked this in a different forum. Someone ordered a 4Runner due in the April/May timeframe and he said that his dealer said that the tariffs "definitely won't affect your order" and I hope that's true as mine is due to land April 20th- May 9th. I wouldn't buy it either if I had to pay a 25% markup.

FWIW, I believe that it's BMW that is essentially eating the cost for at least 30 days, Toyota might do the same thing but I haven't heard anything. I do know that the auto conglomerate in Japan is urging their trade minister to strike a deal, but that deal hasn't happened yet.

I talked to both Lexus and Toyota about the tariff issue about a month ago and both said it will not impact short term prices because the company "has a plan", and expects the tariffs to be revoked at some point in the near future. If the tariffs stick around, then I assume the company will have to pass on some of those costs to the consumers, which would destroy the auto industry.

you talked to leadership at those companies or this is dealer hearsay?

These go into effect on April 2nd.

any idea how quickly they are gonna tack on these charges to the MSRP?
my vehicle is due to land on April 12.
It's not at all clear what portion of MSRP is subject to the tariff. The same complicated arguments and ways to game the system will come into play as when in past years there was a "buy American" push. The people who devised it had no clue how complicated and global the supply and assembly chains are for anything but the simplest product.

The worst-case here would be if the 25% tariff is applied to the full MSRP for any car where final assembly is not in the US regardless of where individual components and subassemblies were made, or assembled. That's way too indiscriminate, but might be what they do, because it's "easier" to apply it. Nearly every vehicle has a mix of parts that were either built or assembled in various countries, then shipped--sometimes via multiple countries because there is intermediate assembly done. None of this was specified so who knows. And maybe--if there are port-installed options installed at a US port--it could be argued that "final" assembly was in the US. I'm hoping for that one to be true.

I wonder if the Monroney sticker will specify the dollar amount of the tariff on a given vehicle. I sure hope so. If it's left vague for the consumer, some unscrupulous US car dealers will use that as a way to pad their profit by making up "additional" tariff numbers beyond the actual amount, and increase prices but some portion will go in their pocket. I doubt the EO is specific enough to make that practice illegal.

Hmmm. We’ll see how this plays out. I’ve been trying to keep up with news on this specifically but of course with nobody knowing exact details it’s hard to assume things. I’m wondering since my 6G landed at port March 20th but say still hasn’t been “checked in” or processed at port by the 2nd, if this would affect things.
