Hey everyone!
I test drove an Off-road premium today and man what an incredible car. For everyone who is worried the non-hybrid might feel sluggish, try the Sport mode. Probably not the best for your mileage but a ton of fun.
Anyway! I’m new to 4runners and I’m new to modifying a car, but here is my predicament (which I think is a common one here):

I love the outdoors, camping etc but I have zero need for a TRD Pro or a Trailhunter. That said, I have a strong preference for the look of the Trailhunter (aside from that snorkel which makes the whole trim undesirable for me). I love the slightly more aggresive stance, tail lights, wheels, tires and front with the heritage logo. So, I wanted to ask this question in a general way to make it more helpful for others as well:

What mods do you think are needed to get the exterior of a TRD OR or ORP to look like a Trailhunter (aside from the snorkel), and how and where do you get those parts?

For instance: could the slightly more aggresive stance be achieved by simply changing the wheels to the Toyo tires from the Trailhunter and Pro and getting the wider fenders? Do wheels automatically come with their own off-set or are spacers needed? And are these trailhunter parts easily sourced at Toyota dealers?

Again, I’ve never gone the route of modifying a vehicle so any tips are welcome!

As the aftermarket ramps up you will have many options. The trail hunter comes with a roof rack that you can order from a dealer. Lift options a limited at this point but you can upgrade tires and offset wheels. My ORP is suppose to be coming with the same roof rack the trail hunter gets. Then I plan to add Method 320s with 18mm offset, then add Falken Wildpeak AT4 275/70R18. I too want to get different tail lights as I'd prefer a smoked out look. I do like the ones on trail hunter as well but will wiat to see what the aftermarket come out with.

Awesome! And just for my understanding, that off-set is inherent to the wheels? Or would you need anything else than the wheels to achieve the offset? I saw that the TRD Pro has +20mm offset.

Oh and are the TRD Pro and Trailhunter more lifted than the ORP? Or is it all the same?

Best if it's in the wheel design for durability but I they do make spacers to achieve offset.

I posted pics in my previous comments to compare the two in Underground.

Thing's I notice:
  • Grill. The ORP has the smaller Toyota logo while the Trailhunter has the larger "Toyota" letters. Trailhunter has another light between the foglights (maybe just different color paint)? I think the trailhunter looks a little nicer there.
  • Front bumper: Silver on Trailhunter. Black on ORP. I'm mostly indifferent on this one, but think the black looks slightly better.
  • Air damn: Present on ORP (can be removed easily). Not present on Trailhunter. I plan to remove this for clearance reasons. I also think it looks better without it. There will be a slight decrease in fuel efficiency if you remove it.
  • Head-lights/Tail-lights: Smoked effect on Trailhunter, clearer on ORP. Trailhunter looks a little better to me, but not by much.
  • Side badge location: Front door on Trailhunter. Behind rear door on ORP. Not sure I care about this at all.
  • Snorkel: Present on Trailhunter. Not present on ORP. I think it looks weird, but serves a functional purpose (not something I think I will personally need enough to add on). I read somewhere that it's more about road dust than water clearance.
  • Fender flares: Different design and possibly bigger on Trailhunter. I noticed the ORP has the front fender flare vents and the Trailhunter does not. I assume they are wider to accommodate wider wheel/tire spacing. This is something to consider if you are upgrading the wheels/tires. I'm not sure I personally care about this one either, but the Trailhunter will probably kickup less road grime than an ORP will with the same width wheel/tire combo.
  • Tires/wheels: "Bigger" on trailhunter and wheels are a different color. The gold wheels look cool, but I like the stock wheels too. I pan to pickup another set of wheels for swapping winter/summer sets. I don't think I'll get this gold color (maybe the all-black ones).
  • Rocksliders/running-boards: Hard to tell in pic, but I think you can see the rock sliders on the Trailhunter. I think you can pick this up for ~$800, but I'm going to look into other aftermarket options.
  • Upgraded roof rack: Present on trailhunter. Not present on ORP. You might want to get a different one since this is a 3/4 length and only 165 pound dynamic load (770 static load is OK). I'm leaning toward Prinsu or Gobi. I've got a moonroof to consider too.
  • Rearview windows: Black on ORP. Body colored on Trailhunter. I like the black better.
It's interesting how the Toyota CAD images maintain the apples-to-apples perspective, but the Trailhunter should ride a little higher with its stock tires.

I've got an ORP (Underground, non-hybrid) on order, so I was curious what the differences are too. I probably would have opted for the Trailhunter if I could get it in non-hybrid. The only thing I'd really like that the Trailhunter has and the ORP does not (and is not easy to upgrade later) is the disconnectable sway bar links. I'll have to look at the skid plates when I get my ORP and decide what I want to upgrade, if anything.

This is helpful for comparison:
https://www.toyota.com/4runner/features/mpg_other_price/8672/8636/8634
(See exterior section)

This is useful because it also gives a more practical idea of what upgrades to consider on the ORP by looking at what comes standard on the Trailhunter and Pro.

You can also see that the Trailhunter sits 0.4" higher... I figured it would be more. The track width is also only 0.8" more. The tires are listed as 265/70R18, but they look bigger on the Traillhunter in the pics. Maybe just a brand difference? "Toyo Open Country A/T III all-terrain tires" is listed for the Trailhunter, but just "all-terrain tires" for the ORP. I'm guessing the specified height difference has to do with the upgraded suspension, not the tires. I'm not sure what the wheel offsets are, but that's probably what is making the tires "look" bigger in the pics.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown @dirtwheeler !
I think the wheels and tires are going to be the first thing I take care of. The TRD pro tires and the Trailhunter tires are both using a +20 offset, and what I can find online that offset is in the wheel design so no spacers would be needed. The standard ORP wheel (or at least the standard wheel upgrade you can get from the dealer) has an offset of +45 as far as I could find. This begs the question though, would that +20 offset of a TRD Pro or Trailhunter wheel look strange without the wider fender flares that is on the TRD Pro and Trailhunter, but not on the ORP.

Anyone know if this part of the bumper is a separate element that can be replaced for the version of the Trailhunter and the Pro that has more clearance?

Interesting question. There does appear to be cutlines on around that part of the Trailhunter bumper. But whether that piece detaches or is available to be purchased as a separate part is another question.

Thanks for this close up view of it @Gastan ! Looking at this it does seem likely that someone will figure this out soon, whether using OEM or aftermarket mods
