I have a deposit on a Trailhunter. If a tariff is implemented I will not buy a new vehicle and will tweak my 2012 Tacoma to last as long as it takes. I will consider moving to Canada if they would have me. How quickly the wheels come off a country and car.
Ha! Exactly my thinking for my TRD Pro order. I'll most likely keep on driving my 2012 runner.

lol the title talks about tariffs and trump but you say no politics. un the whole point of the tariffs is politics.

and its a mute point anyway since the 4R is made in japan and is not part of the tariff restricted areas/countries
I looked up some news from Japan and Toyota is very concerned. But Japan does NOT tariff US Made autos, we already have a small tariff on Japanese autos. The Japanese do not import many US autos, I read Jeep Wranglers are somewhat desired only because of the history of the vehicle. Large Vehicles are considered undesirable and in many cases are too large for roads.

Japanese tariffs are highest in the Agriculture sector on US exports like ~14%

Same boat here. Ain't nothing wrong with my 2013 Tundra, it'll keep chugging along just fine as long as I keep taking care of it.

Not sure I could do Canada. Too cold. Australia maybe LOL

There won’t be issues trading with Japan. They plan to build here and in return (since Japan has always proven to be a great ally post WW2) they won’t be subject to the same tariffs other countries will have to endure.
I know this is not supposed to be political, but are you suggesting that Canada has not been a great ally post War of 1812? I hope that since Canada has no current trade disputes with Japan, we import the Japanese-built versions here extra tarrif free.

I realize there are bigger problems facing the world than the cost of a new 4Runner increasing by $10-20k, but will it influence your purchasing plans?

in my case, I’m second on the waiting list for a TRD PRO. Even if I decide to pay the extra ~$18k upfront ($90k+taxes/fees for a vehicle that now costs $72k+t/f), that $18k paid in import duty will vanish if the tariffs are later eliminated. In that case a new TRD PRO 4Runner will again cost $72k, and I’ll be holding a used one for which I paid $90k.

As much as I was looking forward to the Fox QS3 shocks on a new TRD PRO, a 25% tariff will likely convince me to hold on to my 2014 5th gen—with all my DIY weekend projects: Sonoran Steel lift/suspension kit, hidden winch mount I welded myself, drawers, skid plates, and AGM battery circuitry.
My sales person told me he doesn't think the Japan made 4Runner will be affected by the tariffs. I have a TRD Pro reserved.

Very difficult to predict and I would surmise the sales person would of course want to keep you in the groove to purchase one regardless of what happens. None of us know what POTUS is going to do "we don't hold the cards".

this is true... however Japan has already said they plan to invest 1 Trillion dollars into the US Economy... i don't think more tariffs get leveraged on Japan...

but like you said we don't hold the cards. just being cautiously optimistic.

Also if Japan does get tariffed, i believe the tariffs would only apply to vehicles that have not entered customs yet... heres hoping they get a bunch of 4runners through before if it does happen.

We were about to build a new house on a vacant lot we were purchasing last month and then lumber prices spiked 20% overnight. We decided to hold off until this trade war calms down and were able to get out of the land purchase. The thought that the TRD Pro I’ve been waiting a year for could potentially increase in price by 25% has me fired up. There is zero chance I’m buying it if that’s the case.

I don't believe the U.S. will press Japan too hard on tariffs.

Unlike many of our other trading partners, Japan is a critical strategic partner in defense of a rapidly rising land and naval military power.

They are part of the First Island Chain that hinders Chinese naval power from projecting farther East into the Pacific.

Japan also pays their way for U.S. military stationed in their country (8.6 billion).

Unfortunately, I still do not have a TRD Pro allocation to put a deposit on. I hope you're right that he doesn't apply tariff's on Japan, but he said he wouldn't on the UK and he has done so. Crossing my fingers.
