Anti-theft and insurance

As I get closer to picking up my SR5 some questions are coming up for me.

I called my insurance and they quoted me really high, 3X the current rate I have on my Subaru Crosstrek - they told me it's because the 4runner is stolen often at least here in Montreal. They said they won't even insure without a third party tag system installed.

Couple questions for you guys:

1. Did you install a TAG anti-theft system? Is the cost covered by Toyota?

2. Are your insurance rates higher than usual with the 4Runner?

I think that is a Canada thing. I have heard about the massive car theft rings in Canada. Sadly, the police enforcement is loosing the battle and was slow to respond initially.

I believe the SR5 has GPS reporting to Toyota. Not sure if that would satisfy the insurance requirements of if they would force you into someone they are partnered with.

Out of curiosity, would you mind sharing just a ballpark figure as to how much they quoted you? Whereabouts in Canada?

Our quotes will be vastly different due to many factors even on the same car - age, driving record etc...

They quoted me a little under triple my current Subaru monthly payment for the 2025 4runner SR5 - but they dropped it to double my current Subaru payment with the installation of a third party TAG system. The system itself costs about $700 to install unless Toyota covers it here which I don't know yet.

It's getting more complicated with this one unfortunately. I also don't want the stress of wondering if the rig is going to be stolen from my driveway or from a parking lot somewhere.

I'm aware of that. I was not looking to compare pricing directly, just curious in terms of what province, since there are general trends between them on insurance pricing. We don't have choices as to insurance here, but there are discounts for things like automatic emergency braking (part of TSS).

insurance broker here. yeah, theft is still a very big problem. TAG should cost only $400 installation in Ontario
