Hey all,

has anyone experienced a hard transmission shift for 1st and 2nd gear when initially starting the 4runner, the transmission shifting smooths out almost instantly after that.

curious if anyone has experience this and if its anything to worry about/is there a fix

im running a limited non hybrid

I personally have not felt that.
Are you experiencing this before the engine reaches operating temperature?
The only hard transmission change I've felt (2x) is going from D to R. Both times I thought I came to a complete stop but apparently I didn't b/c when I went into R, I felt the car move/clunk. Since those experiences, I've made sure I'm completely stopped before changing into R and haven't felt it since.

My sr5 does the same thing. Shifts from 3 and on is smooth and quick. But that first shift is rough. Even when warmed up.

its only when the engine has not warmed up… its litterally the first 2 shifts when the 4runner has been sitting for a while

mine is only the first 2 shifts when its been sitting for a while, then 1 and 2 are smooth.

im hoping its just part of breaking it in.. how many miles do you have on your sr5?

About 300-400 miles. Very early in the break in. Curious about others that are broken in

I have some weird shifting from 2-1 mostly when braking when I am braking and it’s getting into 1st I feel like the engine brakes also and it’s making it feel like I am pushing harder on the brakes than I actually am. I don’t have that PDA on. Could just be me also and not being used to new type of transmission from 5th gen

My TRD Sport Premium non-hybrid is doing the same thing: hard shift from first to second. I have 800 miles on it.

is it the initial first couple shifts and then smooths out after? like 1 and 2 are fine after

Usually only initially, though it has happened a bit later when accelerating quickly onto roadways.

Same thing on my Sport Premium with about 400 miles. Mine occurs like second to third. It’s not like a hard shift, but a subtle “thud”. Everything else is silky smooth. Only occurs on the upshift, nothing when it’s downshifting to slow.
