I thought this was interesting and worth sharing. I recently traded in my 2017 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium for the 2025 TRD Off-Road Premium iForce Max Hybrid.

The following is a side-by-side comparison of the insurance cost as quoted by Traveler's Insurance. Note that I have two teenage drivers on our policy (🥺) so please don't judge the actual premium amounts. My point is that, all other things being equal, the new hybrid 4Runner is a lot more expensive to insure than the 5th Gen.

I'm in the middle of my policy which ends on 7/9. Added my 4R today so exactly 3 months left. Policy increased by $352. I'm with Progressive in CA

I have a general quote (based on the vehicle and trim not actual VIN yet) from Liberty Mutual and my annual cost for a TRD Pro would be $440 per year more than my current 2018 Highlander XLE. Not bad for a brand new vehicle that is a lot more expensive and has a lot more electronics and sensors that might need to be repaired in a minor accident. BTW, the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail would have been $1000 more per year.

from my perspective, its not a really a lateral cost comparison.

you are talking about an 8 yr old vehicle with years of parts built up for repairs and cost reduction of parts over the years.

the higher cost of a new one is going to be big, regardless of vehicle. it was the same when i went from a 2004 to a 2014 4R. the same is for the 2025.

lack of parts, new model, higher cost of vehicle. give it 5-10 yrs and your insurance cost will go down.

i see the same effect when we went from a 2018 tundra platinum to our 23 tundra platinum. the insurance cost jumped from 120 per month to 167 per month (example not actualy costs as i am not at home)

those figures are just estimates, i pay so little for coverage i dont keep check of it anymore.

its probably way less than what is stated above. i only pay like 275 a month for 3 life insurance and 2014 4R limited and 2023 Tundra platinum plus a 1 mil rider

i do know my 4R is like $68 or $86 per month for 100/100 deduct and 300k/500k plus 1 mil rider (also helps i do less than 7500 miles/year and almost 60 and i have multi policy discounts :))

I was quoted a $240 increase from wife's '21 Honda CR-V (trading in) on a 6 month policy. That was using the VIN.

Hi there. I just picked up my TRD Pro on Wednesday and was coming from a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee High Altitude. I live in Northwest Montana and my 6 month premium for the Jeep through Progressive was $515. I have $100k/$300k, medical, uninsured/underinsured, rental car, etc. I almost fell off my chair when I gave them the Vin for TRD Pro, when they told be it would be a $78.61 decrease. So my new 6-month premium is a whopping $436.39. I have a sneaking suspicion they are rating it wrong, but I'm hoping not! Might be something about living in rural Montana...

When I was deciding gas vs hybrid I quoted the exact same trim for two different 25 4Runners using actual VINs from Progressive. Hybrid was $800/year more which is one of the reasons I chose gas.

Hey there. Just as a comparison, I am with Progressive and my 6-month premium for the TRD Pro is $436.39. I have $100k/$300k, medical, rental, etc and live in Northwest Montana. Not sure why it is so inexpensive...

Thanks for the info. I'm in Atlanta and pay $390 for 6 months. They told me the hybrid option would've been over $750. $250k/$500k liability, UM, $500 deductibles.

Sounds like you got a good deal. I remember when getting the quotes they originally had difficulty finding the hybrid option (this was a couple months ago) but I wonder if their system hasn't recognized the TRD Pro as hybrid yet? Either way, keep quiet and save your money!

You're welcome and that's what I'm going to do! My 2018 Jeep GC was more expensive...
