Pretty big hit to the payload on the Pro and Trailhunter, but I assume the additional armor that comes factory is at least partly to blame. Good to see that the non-hybrids are more or less the same weight as the outgoing model with a LOT more torque and gears available. Should improve drivability of the 6th gen considerably over the 5th gen.

Hi. Can someone please explain what Toyota is doing to increase the GVWR from the 2wd SR5 @ 6005lbs to the TH hybrid at 6505lbs? Different wheels and tires / suspension ... but any difference to the frame or brakes? Or is toyota de-rating the GVWR for the lower trims and assigning a higher rating to the higher trims just with no real difference? My thought is, maybe the SR5 4x4 is actually capable of a higher GVWR and thus payload but Toyota is derating them for some reason. THanks!

The industry standard definition of payload is:
Payload = GVWR - curb weight
That should be the factory payload on the driver's door jamb sticker, but it's not.
They add a yellow "adjustment" sticker for the per-vehicle port/dealer installed options.
Owners then have to further reduce the payload based on things they add, e.g. roof rack weight, new tires/wheels that are x lbs heavier than factory, etc.

GVWR is a rating given by the manufacturer based on the frame and other considerations for a given model. GVWR cannot be weighed on a scale. It's a determination/calculation, to set a worst-case safe maximum.

So, why are the payloads listed on driver's door jamb stickers too low by hundreds of lbs? If toyota wanted to add "safety margin" they should have baked that into the GVWR. Did they mis-state the GVWR and don't want to admit it? Misprinted door jamb stickers?
