Today, I test did a test drive of the 2025 TRD ORP. Almost everything exceeded expectations except for the way the 2nd row folds forward and the space for sleeping measures only 5’0”. I’m only 5’9”+ but it will not be a comfortable sleep. Also getting in and out the door will be a bit of a challenge for me as it is not more than a 1/2 door with the back seat folded forward. Am I looking at this correctly? Wondering why Toyota went with this design.

You got the measurement right. With the second row folded forward, there's about 59" distance from the seats to the liftgate.

See this thread: https://www.4runner6g.com/forum/thr...istance-from-seats-to-tailgate-liftgate.2379/

And here's the cargo area / dimensions video the measurement is from:

Seems like the 2nd row could be removed fairly easily. Might be an option if it is only you and one passenger.

My guess, again just a guess, is that Toyota thinks that a very, very small % of people sleep in their 4Runner, therefore it's not a major design consideration of theirs.

I'm 6' and my wife is 5'9", we slept in our 4Runner (3rd gen) only twice, when we were younger. I might give it another go when I get our next one, but my wife wants a converted van.

In my head: Toyota lost the plot on their storage/cargo configurations lately. The LC and the 4Runner hybrids have a battery placement that is just...Well...Awful. Did they hire that engineering task out to a room full of capybaras? Raising the load floor and impacting what arguably puts the "U" in "SUV" seems ridiculous. But there they go. Consistently doing it. I'm assuming I'm just missing something where putting the batteries on the sides like saddlebags or underneath would be viable. Hell, I'd lose the spare and put them there if given the choice. Tons of cars come without spares these days, and hard core off-roaders are going to externally mount their spares anyway.

Don't even get me started on the Sequoia's rear cargo/battery abomination. It was at the top of my list until I saw that. Full stop at that point. I haven't looked at them since. When the smallisih 5th gen 4Runner has more cargo space than a full size giant ass Sequoia, you've got some packaging issues for which you need better solutions.

All ^^^^ that diatribe aside...Here my dumbass is...Still looking at Toyotas. :D

I have a 5th gen with a 3rd which raises the floor about 6" like the hybrid and not a big deal for me but YMMV. I might rip it out in the near future which you cannot do with a hybrid.

With that said, I agree with the hybrid not making a lot of sense to me. 2.4t non-hybrid seems to be the powertrain to get in these latest toyotas.
